The International Civil Aviation
Organisation (ICAO) Secretary General, Mr Raymond Benjamin has said that the organization was
determined to ensure that safety and security of air transport is enhanced in Tanzania.
The ICAO boss made the remarks
shortly after his arrival where he was welcomed by Transport Minister, Dr
Harrison Mwakyembe and other government officials.
Mr Benjamin, who landed in Dar es
Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport from Ethiopia where he had also
held an official tour, will be in the country for five days.
The visit, among other things, is
aimed at making a follow-up on efforts of contracting states in meeting their
obligations under the Chicago Convention for the safe operations of international
civil aviation.
Mr Benjamin said that the visit
would also be vital as ICAO will consequently learn major areas of interest in
the aviation industry in Tanzania and Africa in general.
“We are putting a lot of emphasis
on the safety and security of air transport sector, these are our must, we arealso
looking for economic vibrant areas of aviation sector,” he said.
Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority
(TCAA) Acting Director, Mr Charles Chacha noted that the visit was highly significant
for Tanzania, as it would be in a position to learn a number of things to
improve the aviation sector.
Mr Chacha noted that in his
official tour of Tanzania, the ICAO chief will hold discussions with senior government
officials from the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
International Cooperation, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Communication
of Zanzibar and aviation stakeholders.
“He is also expected to pay a
courtesy call to the President Jakaya Kikwete and the Zanzibar president. He
will also visit and see aviation infrastructure developments and improvements
in the country supporting the safety air navigation,” Mr Chacha stated.
ICAO, which currently has 191 contracting
states, is a specialized United Nations (UN) agency responsible for international
civil aviation
