The Zimbabwe national flag carrier, Air Zimbabwe, will
resume a scheduled service between Harare International Airport (HRE) in Harare and Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Effective
14 May 2016, the airline will initially operate two flights per week on Tuesdays
and Saturdays on board an Airbus A320 between
the two cities.
The airline seeks to tap into the growing trade between the two
countries.
Air Zim
spokesperson Shingai Dhliwayo confirmed the opening of the new route.
“We
will start flying into Dar es Salaam on May 14 as we want to help cross-border
traders and business travellers flying between the two countries,” she said.
Dhliwayo added: “The airline has a
generous baggage limit of 40 kilogrammes per passenger and this should come in
handy for the flying public.”
The return trip fare would be starting
from $400 per person, with flights every Tuesday and Saturday.
The new route will put AirZim in
direct competition with budget airline FastJet that also plies the route, but
charges passengers according to the baggage they are carrying.
Dar es Salaam will become the third
regional destination that AirZim has scheduled flights to after Johannesburg
and Lusaka.
Dhliwayo said the airline was
consolidating its position on the regional routes as it aims to start flying
long haul flights to Europe and Far East.
“The airline remains determined to
re-open its direct flights to London and China in the near future as resources
become available and when an agreement with a strategic partner is concluded,”
she said.
